FASHION REVOLUTION

In this day and age, sustainable clothing is more than just a trend, it's becoming a necessity. There is a silent revolution happening where consumers are balking against what big business is telling is - and not buying fast fashion.

This trend is something to be admired but how does it begin - firstly the consumers start to question there ever growing wardrobes and then they feel shame for wearing an item just a few times and it has started to literally fall apart at the seams. in the bigger picture they realise the massive amount of resources it takes to make all these items of clothing and all the pollution is causes.

The clothing industry is the second largest polluter in the world, second only to oil. Most of the waste is not biodegradable and sits in landfill. we need to become more conscious of where our clothes come from and what they are made of.

The key is to be more "mindful" of what we buy and where we buy - producing clothes ethically, in a sustainable and mindful fashion. so what do we do to create change?

As a stylist people think "but you are in the fashion industry - you are always about what is new or 'on trend'".

Actually no.

For years I have advocated buying 'what suits your body shape' and key quality pieces that will last; some of my key mantras when doing a clients wardrobe is 'buy less wear more' and 'shop your wardrobe'. The smartest well dressed people probably only go shopping twice a year but they buy top quality and buy what suits them (with a few high fashion items).

One of the ways we can change is buy looking for ethical alternatives - Stella McCartney has only used vegan leather and sustainable cloth in her offerings. Yael Oflalo created a new label: The Reformation - fabulous sustainable fabrics and amazing cuts. Pieces that you will want to wear for a very long time.

Kitx is another brand that focuses on sustainable fabrics. the follow on label by Kit Willow is refreshing not only in its tailoring but the fabric choices are luxurious yet earthy.

"KITX STRIVES TO BE A PIONEER IN DESIGN-LED, SUSTAINABLE AND ETHICAL FASHION. “WE CREATE PRODUCT LOVE WITH HIGH FREQUENCY WEAR, SUPERIOR QUALITY AND CREATIVE DESIGN WHILE CONSCIOUSLY SOURCING MATERIALS THAT MINIMISE HARM TO OUR PLANET’S PRECIOUS RESOURCES.” “I STRONGLY BELIEVE IN A BETTER WORLD, THROUGH THE SIMPLE MANTRA OF MAKING WOMEN LOOK AND FEEL BEAUTIFUL, WITHOUT HARMING OUR PLANET, SO EVERYONE CAN WIN.” KIT WILLOW

So what next, I will be choosing my pieces more carefully and mindfully - balancing my wardrobe with quality ethical and sustainable wardrobe workhorses.
